Love. Lust. Blackmail. Romance. Revenge. Is finding love worth getting even?

Shy, overweight Melinda Rhodes' sophomore year of high school isn't going so well. Her mother mocks her weight. She spends her weekends holed up in her room making what her friend calls "Freaky eyeball paintings." Her pants split in the middle of school, earning her the nickname, "Moolinda." She then loses first chair flute in band to Kathy Meadows, the pretty and popular mean girl who's tormented Mel for years.

Her luck changes when she catches the eye of Josh Kowalski, a rebellious trumpet prodigy and class clown. Josh has also been hurt by Kathy and asks Melinda to help take Kathy down. Mel figures that she has nothing to lose ... and Josh is adorable with gorgeous blue eyes and a winning smile. She agrees to team up with him and looks forward to finally getting back at her rival.

At first, the pair's pranks against Kathy are silly, and as they work together, Mel comes out of her shell. Wild, impulsive Josh gets her to do things she'd never done before and Mel enjoys being a bad girl. Even better, she and Josh fall in love and their teen romance blossoms.

However, as their schemes become more involved and dangerous, Mel begins to question her loyalty to Josh -- and is surprised to find how dark her dark side really is. Just how far will she be willing to go to get what she wants -- and is keepng Josh really worth the risk of going against her beliefs?

This is a coming of age tale about finding love, staying on top and staying true to yourself. Is it really possible for Melinda to have it all?

Revenge Of A Band Geek Gone Bad A Contemporary Young Adult Romance/Coming Of Age Tale eBook Naomi Rabinowitz

Melinda is having a hard time at school, being teased and ridiculed for her weight. Her classmates call her Moolinda and this is definitely not done with subtlety or on the sly. One of the main offenders is fellow bandmate and flutist Kathy. When Melinda loses her first chair spot to Kathy she is devastated!!! But then out of the blue the class clown, gorgeous, popular trumpet playing Josh Kowalski approaches her with a plan to exact revenge on Kathy. At first Mel is hesitant but she goes along with Josh's plans and in the process gets to spend quality time with josh and a solid friendship is formed. The more time they spend together, the more Mel falls for Josh and she is surprised to find that he could feel the same way about her.

As Kathy's taunts escalate so does Mel's need for revenge. It doesn't help that her mum is on the ridicule wagon about Mel's weight as well. This sets in motion a chain of events which lead Mel to question her need for revenge but it also brings to light some secrets that Josh has been keeping!!

I have to say that this was just such a great book!! I loved every minute of it. I loved the growth of Mel. She went from a girl who has shy and timid and had major self worth issues to a girl who was much more confident and sure of herself.

And Josh... What can I say about Josh... I loved his passion for music and life in general. I loved his quirkiness and his ability to have fun. I loved that he saw such beauty in Mel. I loved their friendship. I loved his need to protect and care for her even if at times he went about it the wrong way.

And then we have Mel's mum. Oh, how I really didn't like her and the nasty things she said to Mel. She just made me cringe with her choice of words so many times!! Even when Mel lost weight it just wasn't enough and she just couldn't find it in herself to be supportive!!

All in all Revenge of a Band Geek Gone Bad, was a fantastic and enjoyable read. Naomi Rabinowitz, writes with such ease and creates characters who are extremely relatable. I'm looking forward to reading more from this author!!

Revenge Of A Band Geek Gone Bad A Contemporary Young Adult Romance/Coming Of Age Tale eBook Naomi Rabinowitz Reviews

I have chosen a few young adult books to read over the last few months both to be able to share good ones with my daughter and also because they are so hopeful. This one was a good one. It did a good job of bringing the reader along as the main characters figured out who they were and how their actions were going to affect others.
This was actually a really well written story with relatable characters. The 'populars' bullying the 'music geek'. But this time she fights back......with the encouragement of her new boyfriend.....and even though she wins more often than not her conscience won't let her off the hook.
Well written with some feel good moments
I wasn't sure what to expect when I downloaded this book, but the cover certainly caught my attention. I really enjoyed the story, as well. The title makes it sound like a funny book -- and it is; it's a dark comedy -- but there were also a lot of dramatic sections. I really felt for the narrator/main character, Melinda, and wanted her to succeed. As a narrator, she's snarky and honest, and draws you right into her story.

Here's the basic plot Melinda is a shy, quiet high school girl who thinks of herself as a loser. She's picked on by the other kids and doesn't have many friends. The opening scene where everyone mocks her reminded me a little of the movie, "Welcome To The Dollhouse." She then loses first chair flute in band to Kathy, who seems like your typical mean girl -- only in this case, Kathy actually has talent.

Melinda joins up with Josh, who's a year older than her and has a reputation for being the bad boy. He enjoys tormenting their conductor and generally causes a lot of trouble around the school. But he's also handsome and a great trumpet player. So when he asks Melinda to help him take Kathy down, she signs on. This part reminded me a little of the movie "Heathers."

As Mel and Josh spend their time plotting schemes against Kathy, they bond over their love for music. We also get to know Josh a lot better and realize that he, too, is an outcast and is really not that much of a bad boy. They become close friends and then eventually more.

But when Mel is hurt, Josh decides to seek revenge on his own and comes up with a scheme that Mel is really against. Their relationship is put to the test and Mel has to decide if she wants to do the right thing or just ignore Josh's actions. She's finally forced to grow up.

One thing I enjoyed is that the book is very character-driven. Mel and Josh are both really well-rounded. They had some deep conversations about life and music, and their bond was very believable. I also liked Mel's best friend, Lana, who's just a sweetheart and Mel's mom, who's flawed, but sympathetic. The conductor, Mr. Francis, and Josh's friend Lenny made me laugh.

The one thing I do wish is that we'd gotten to know some of the other characters better. Mel's dad, mean girl Tamara and Ken the football jock are all interesting, but they don't have that many scenes. I also thought that Josh maybe got away with a little too much at first -- though he does eventually suffer some consequences.

Overall, I was impressed with this book. I picked it up expecting it to be a light read, but it went pretty deep for a teen story and there were some parts that were heartbreaking. I look forward to reading more from this author.
Let me start by saying, I was never in band nor do I play any instruments (unless you count knowing a few chords on a guitar). So, I was not sure if this book was for me. But, the cover and title really attracted me to the story. I always love stories about revenge. Well, within the first few pages of the book, I was hooked. Rabinowitz is an amazing storyteller, who easily brings you into the world of high school band and its competitiveness. She has created characters that everyone can identify with. Characters that grow as the story is being told, which often does not happen in fiction.

Mel, the main character, is the unpopular, band geek, who is often picked on by the popular kids, mostly lead by Kathy. When Kathy beats out Mel in the one thing she excels in (playing the flute), Mel is crushed. Luckily, the rebel troublemaker in band, Josh, hates Kathy too. So, they team up to bring Kathy down. With a great mix of secondary characters, you will feel like your right back in high school.

Although, I imagine the author wrote this book for the teenage crowd, I believe anyone whomever survived high school will love this book- whether it was a few years ago or 20 years ago (in my case). I look forward to Rabinowitz next book.
